Fire destroyed a five-bedroom single-family home and killed the family's two cats and a dog Wednesday, Jan. 23, north of Crosby.
The fire was reported 1:51 p.m. at the house on the 17000 block of Crow Wing County Highway 11 north of Crosby.
Eric Makowski-Budrow, interim fire chief for Mission Fire and Rescue, said the family, who was not home at the time of the fire, lost everything. Makowski-Budrow said there is some structure left, but all the contents were heavily damaged by smoke.
Makowski-Budrow said the cause of the fire is undetermined, but is not suspicious. He said it appears the fire started somewhere in a room above the garage-the area sustaining the most damage.
Upon arrival and seeing how massive the fire was, Mission called for mutual aid from Crosslake and Nisswa fire departments, and later paged Pequot Lakes, Crosby, Ironton and Cuyuna fire departments for help.

"Our response time was minutes, as we happened to be at the fire station," Makowski-Budrow said. "But the fire was heavy and being in a rural area, we called for mutual aid."
All the area fire departments cooperated well together and "we were able to knock the fire down quickly," he said.
Makowski-Budrow said firefighters used about 30,000 gallons of water to extinguish the fire.
The American Red Cross was called to assist the family.
According to the Crow Wing County detailed tax parcel report, the homeowner is Kim Pouliot. According to a family friend, the homeowner's daughter, husband and two children lived at the home. The estimated value of the home by itself is listed at $137,900. The home sits on 17.28 acres.
