A 35-year-old Brainerd man faces three felony domestic charges following an incident Sunday at a Brainerd residence.

Shawn David Wilkinson made his first appearance on the charges Tuesday in Crow Wing County District Court in Brainerd in front of Judge Erik J. Askegaard. Bail or bond was set at $50,000 without conditions or $10,000 with conditions. Conditions include not leaving the state, no contact with the victim, cannot possess any firearms or ammunition and must make all future court appearances.

Wilkinson was not on the Crow Wing County Jail in-custody list Wednesday. His next court appearance is Aug. 21.

According to the statement of probable cause filed against Wilkinson, Brainerd police were dispatched at 1:24 a.m. Sunday to a residence in Brainerd regarding a report of a physical domestic assault in progress. Officers were advised the caller was being threatened by Wilkinson, who told her if she didn't want the victim to go to prison, she shouldn't call the police. The caller put the phone down so dispatchers could listen to what was going on between Wilkinson and the victim.

Upon arrival, an officer went to the rear of the house where he observed the victim crying and was looking back and forth in different directions, appearing to be panicked. The officer learned Wilkinson left on foot. The victim, who is known to Wilkinson, told officers the two got into an argument and at one point Wilkinson threw her onto the bed. The victim admitted she punched Wilkinson. Wilkinson continued to scream, yell and be upset before leaving on foot.

Officers located Wilkinson and he was taken into custody. Wilkinson was wet and smelled of a swamp and appeared to have been hiding in a swamp to avoid the police finding him, the complaint stated.

Wilkinson has two prior convictions for qualified domestic violence-related offenses occurring within the past 10 years. He was convicted of domestic assault in 2014 in Koochiching County and in 2011 in Itasca County.
