Driver falls asleep, crashes into another vehicle

A Brainerd man was injured in a two-vehicle crash at 5:30 a.m. Tuesday, June 16, at an intersection in northeast Brainerd.

The Brainerd Police Department reported James W. Brown, 26, of Brainerd, was traveling south and Ryan Liebel, 46, of Nisswa, was traveling north on the 1600 block of Mill Avenue. Police reported Brown started to fall asleep and drifted across the left turn lane and into the opposing lane. Police reported Liebel had his passenger side tires up on the curb trying to avoid a collision, but the vehicles crashed.

Brown was injured and transported by North Memorial Health Ambulance to Essentia Health-St. Joseph’s Medical Center in Brainerd. He later was flown to North Memorial Health Hospital in Robbinsdale, family stated. Liebel was not injured.

The Brainerd Fire Department was called to assist with extrication and scene assistance.
