The Minnesota Department of Public Safety's Driver and Vehicle Services division announced it will overhaul its computer system beginning July 17, during which service will be limited.
Online vehicle tab renewal and other online services will be unavailable through July 24.
"DPS-DVS is replacing the system used for motor vehicle and driver's license transactions and record information," a news release said. "The motor vehicle portion of the Minnesota Licensing and Registration System will be implemented during this time, replacing the current 30-year-old mainframe computer system."
While the Brainerd License Office is a private business, it still must conform to state Department of Vehicle Service directives, as well as state laws and regulations. The Brainerd location's owner, Donny Vosen, said motor vehicle titles and other car transaction-related document processing would be unavailable July 20 and 21. However, driver's licenses, permits and DNR-related business would be available those two days.
In addition, the office would be closed to the public entirely July 24.

Vosen encouraged anyone with business at the Brainerd License Office to get it done immediately, before the overhaul starts. Office hours are 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
Even after the official overhaul is completed, the Department of Public Safety recommended customers allow for extra time during their visits in order to accommodate the employees getting used to the new system.
