DULUTH - A proposed mountain biking trail in Duluth is a finalist in a contest that will award $100,000 for trail building.
The Spirit Mountain Recreation Area trail is one of three in the running for the money, which is being awarded by Bell Bike Helmets and the International Mountain Bicycling Association.
“This will only further secure Duluth … as an outdoor recreation destination,” Duluth Mayor Don Ness said in a statement. “The revitalization of the St. Louis River corridor will benefit our entire city, and winning an entire new trail here at Spirit Mountain will only help that along.”
Voting in the contest is open through 11 a.m. Thursday. As of about noon Monday, the Duluth trail was trailing the Urban Wilderness Gravity Trail in Knoxville, Tenn.
If the Duluth project is selected, Cyclists of Gitchee Gumee Shores will build the downhill trail near a chairlift.
