Pine River resident Edward "Ed" R. Nelson is throwing his name in the ring and running for the commissioner seat for District 2 in Cass County.
Nelson is running against incumbent Robert Kangas and John W. Warren, who also filed.
Nelson, 60, has lived in Pine River since 1966. He graduated from Pine River High School in 1975 and earned an associates of fine arts degree from what is known today as Central Lakes College in Brainerd.
This will be Nelson's third attempt to become the county commissioner.
"I am running in hopes to work with the people of the county and to make things better," Nelson said. "I look forward to working with the people of the county and to help them out as much as I can at the county level. I want to help keep a good budget and be fiscally responsible."

Nelson, who is unemployed at this time, worked at Holiday Stationstore in Pine River for about seven years before he became unemployed. Nelson said being unemployed will allow him to devote himself full-time to the county commissioner position. Nelson said he is the chaplain for the Crow Wing County Disabled American Veterans and a lifetime member.
Nelson is single and has no children. He said some of his siblings live in the Pine River area.
