Early Friday morning family and fellow educators gathered at the lobby of the Washington Education Building in Brainerd to honor the 2018 Teacher of the Year-June Dahlgren.
Dahlgren thought the small group entering her room in Early Childhood Special Education was on a tour. With sunlight pouring in from the east windows, teachers worked with children with special needs. In the middle of the classroom working with a child, Dahlgren looked up at the group ready to show the visitors her department. Instead she was honored for her 22 years of teaching in special education in the district.
"I see June work tirelessly with our youngest learners, never wavering from the passion that pushes her each day to face the challenges side by side with her students," wrote Steve Lund, Brainerd Public Schools director of Business Services, in his nomination of Dahlgren as teacher of the year. "Without knowing it, June has also played a significant role in my professional life, teaching me that the things that count, can't always be counted."
A surprised Dahlgren said, "I was wondering who was going to be teacher of the year this year, I usually get an email. Today I found out it was me"
The award is sponsored by Education Minnesota Brainerd with support from the Brainerd School District. For more photos go to https://bit.ly/2IztpvG
