Why did you choose the viola?: "For my musical background, I started playing piano when I was 4. When I was in fifth grade I listened to the music ensembles that performed at the school and I wanted to join both—band and orchestra. I picked up the flute for band and viola for orchestra. The viola had a really unique sound and tone to it and it's between the violin and the cello, so it's like the best of both. I started playing them both in sixth grade."

How did it go as you were learning?: "I liked it right away. I liked learning new pieces and working with my friends who also played viola. It was really hard at first to learn. I didn't feel like my fingers were big enough. I thought my first couple of sounds were not the best. My pinky is super short compared to the rest of my fingers. I think that is why my dad put me in piano when I was 4, because he was like, that will make your pinky grow if in piano."

Have you tried any other stringed instruments?: "I've played my brother's violin and I can read the music for violin since I also play the flute and piano."

Most challenging song: "My current solo piece is musically demanding. There are a lot of parts where you have to add expressions, and the technical elements are kind of hard, too. The piece is by Robert Schumann called 'Märchenbilder.'"

Do you play at venues for fun?: "I play in a string ensemble with three other students in Chamber Orchestra. We do gigs around the community. It just started at the end of last school year. It's really fun and we get to meet a lot of people."

After high school plans: "I'm not sure yet. I'm not sure yet if I will continue to play the viola or the flute when I go to college."
