Brainerd School Board members approved schematic designs for a remodel project at the Brainerd Learning Center, set to start next summer.
As part of the districtwide building remodel project after the 2018 referendum, the Brainerd Learning Center will see renovations to the western half of the building.
The east entrance will serve as the main secure entrance, while the west entrance will primarily be used as an exit.
Mike Angland of Widseth, who presented the designs to the school board June 28, said consultants are excited about the new commons area, which will also double as cafeteria space and has an adjacent office suite with a direct connection to the commons, making supervision easy.
The kitchen will have a larger serving area and better means of flow for students. Two new family and consumer sciences labs in the southwest corner of the building will serve as in-home settings to teach students basic skills for home life, complete with stoves, sinks, dishwashers, refrigerators, microwaves, and washers and dryers.
In the restrooms, child-height Americans with Disabilities Act-compliant fixtures will be upgraded to adult height and will still be ADA-compliant.
The project is planned to be completed during the summer of 2022.
