ST. PAUL - Minnesota has released an environmental report on a proposed electric transmission line expected to run through the northwest region of the state.

The final environmental impact statement for the Great Northern Transmission Line, proposed by Duluth-based Minnesota Power, will be used by the state Public Utilities Commission to decide whether to issue a route permit for the project, according to a news release from the Minnesota Department of Commerce.

Minnesota Power wants to build the 220-mile, 500-kilovolt transmission line from the Canadian border in Roseau County to a substation near Grand Rapids, Minn. The company expects to finish the project by 2020.

Depending on the final route, the line would cross Beltrami, Itasca, Roseau, Koochiching and Lake of the Woods counties.
