Brainerd lakes area police officers from area jurisdictions, including Brainerd, Baxter and Nisswa will provide extra patrol Saturday to help combat drunken driving during the Jaycee's Ice Fishing Extravaganza held on Hole-in-the-Day Bay on Gull Lake.
Driving while intoxicated (DWI) enforcement and education is a component of Minnesota's core traffic safety initiative, Toward Zero Deaths (TZD). A primary vision of the TZD program is to create a safe driving culture in Minnesota in which motorists support a goal of zero road fatalities by practicing and promoting safe and smart driving behavior. TZD focuses on the application of four strategic areas to reduce crashes - education, enforcement, engineering and emergency trauma response.
During a recent enhanced campaign held from Nov. 26 to Dec. 31 of 2014, Minnesota police officers, deputies and Minnesota State Patrol Troopers arrested 2,537 people for DWI.
"As a reminder to everyone, plan ahead for a safe and sober ride," Brainerd officer Tony Runde said.
