Tessa Gilson

Grade: Senior.

Age: 18.

Art focus: Brainerd High School (BHS) Fifth Street Journal.

Adviser nomination: “Tessa’s done a great job as the school newspaper’s photo editor this semester. She’s pushed herself to improve her writing and she has quickly picked up and honed the skills necessary to take quality and unique photos for the paper. I trust her to do the best job possible and I’m glad she joined our staff.”

Memorable fine arts achievement: “Being named Fine Arts Student of the Week.”

Why did you join Fifth Street Journal: “I joined first semester because I had Ms. (Maria) Macioce (Fifth Street adviser) last year and I liked her. I also wanted to take something new before leaving BHS.”

What do you like about working on the school newspaper: “I like the group and taking photos.

“I like taking photos of anything. The kids and staff usually tell me what to shoot.”

Your favorite photo: “I’ve been taking close-ups of pictures around the school of things that the students walk by all the time, but don’t notice. I’m trying to make them more aware of the smaller things. I took a photo of writing on a black radiator where the words are broken.”

What are you working on now (March 7): “Editing the photos and making sure everything is ready to go to meet the deadline.

After high school plans: “I plan to attend North Dakota State University to study engineering.”

Favorite TV show: “Switched at Birth.”

Favorite book: “The Hunger Games.”

Favorite subject: Math.

Favorite movies: ”The Outsiders” and “The Hunger Games.”

Hobbies: Ride horses, snowmobile, dirt bike riding, watching TV and hanging out with friends.

“We raise chickens for Golden Plump. We also have horses, cows, two dogs and a cat ... I hate cats.”

Other activities/clubs: American Sign Language Club and softball.

Favorite restaurant: Red Lobster.

Parents: Curt and Leanna Gilson of Fort Ripley.

Honorable Mentions:

Kasey Smith and Sinthia Nelson, seniors, Brainonian: “Kasey and Sinthia have done an amazing job on the group photo section of the yearbook. They had some of the hardest and biggest groups to label and they did an amazing job getting the information and labeling the pages.”

Amanda Kunde, senior, art: “I believe Amanda is probably a mystery to most people who share her daily environments. She is an exceptionally creative introvert with a cynical side and subtle sense of humor that emerges in many of the artistic creations. She is technically skilled in a variety of media and her quality artwork is not only striking, but often surprises the viewer upon closer inspection of her pieces.”
