Heat and smoke damaged a 1 1/2 story rental home Monday, April 13, in Nokay Lake Township.

The Brainerd Fire Department was called at 4:09 p.m. to a home on fire on the 12000 block of Crow Wing County Highway 8. The caller reported seeing white smoke coming from the home.

Fire Chief Tim Holmes reported firefighters were able to get into the house and quickly extinguish the fire in the area of the kitchen. The fire extended into the attic space. Fire was contained to the area around the kitchen, but there was heat and smoke damage throughout, Holmes reported.

Holmes reported no one was home at the time of the fire. There were two cats inside, and firefighters were able to rescue one and brought it to the neighbor’s house. The other cat died in the house.

The Minnesota State Fire Marshal’s Office is investigating the fire to determine the cause and origin of the fire.
