Fire destroys Sobieski bar Monday night

SOBIESKI-About 70 firefighters fought a fire at Herbie's Bar in Sobieski Monday night.

The fire was reported at 6:40 p.m. at the Sobieski bar, about 5 miles southwest of Little Falls.

Morrison County Sheriff Shawn Larsen reported when deputies arrived the south end of the building was fully engulfed in flames along with two vehicles. The Bowlus Fire Department responded and was assisted by the Little Falls, Upsala and Flensburg fire departments.

Larsen reported four people were inside the bar when the fire started and everyone was able to escape without injury.

The building is considered a total loss. The State Fire Marshal's Office was notified and will be conducting an investigation.

Also assisting on scene were the First Response Team, Minnesota State Patrol, Gold Cross Ambulance, Morrison County Public Works and Rod's Excavating and Bobcat, both of Little Falls.

Herbie's Bar is owned and operated by the John and Joyce Gorka, who purchased the bar on Jan. 1, 1987, according to the Morrison County Record in Little Falls. The bar has been open since the early 1940s. In 2014, Herbie's Bar was voted for having the best fish fry in Minnesota.
