Lakes area firefighters remembered others who gave their lives in the performance of their duty with a 9/11 Stair Climb event, one of many hosted around the globe that remember the firefighters who climbed the stairs of the World Trade Center on Sept. 11.

“Through firefighter and community participation we can ensure that each of the 343 firefighters is honored and that the world knows that we will never forget,” the National Fallen Firefighters Foundation noted on its website.

Each person pays tribute to the FDNY firefighters and climbs the equivalent of the 110 stories of the World Trade Center. Individual tributes not only remember the sacrifice of an FDNY brother, but symbolically completes their heroic journey to save others, Brainerd Fire Chief Tim Holmes noted in a description of the event.

“We had 19 firefighters participate along with many families there to show their support and cheer us on,” Holmes stated. “Firefighters from Brainerd, Pequot Lakes, and Crosslake participated.”
