Fires damages home in Aitkin County
AITKIN—A grass fire Monday, May 13, in Spencer Township in Aitkin County spread to a nearby home, causing extensive damage, Aitkin County officials reported.
The Aitkin County Sheriff's Office reported the Aitkin Fire Department, DNR Forestry and Enforcement, Minnesota State Patrol and North Memorial Ambulance responded to the fire, reported at 12:07 p.m.. When units arrived to the grass fire, a nearby residence was partially engulfed and a large amount of smoke was present, causing a temporary closure of State Highway 47.
Aitkin Fire Department members quickly verified no one was inside the burning home. Contact was made with the homeowner, who later arrived on scene.
An investigation revealed the homeowner has been burning near the residence, which eventually led to the structure fire. The fire was extinguished and the house sustained severe damage from smoke, fire and water.
