The Brainerd Fire Department will host its annual open house 5-7 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 10, at the fire station on Laurel Street.
The open house coincides with Fire Prevention Week, which is Oct. 6-12. This year’s National Fire Protection Association campaign is “Not Every Hero Wears a Cape. Plan and Practice Your Escape!” The campaign works to educate everyone about the small but important actions people can take to keep themselves and others around them safe.
In a typical home fire, people may have as little as one to two minutes to escape safely from the time the smoke alarm sounds.
According to the National Fire Protection Association, last year there were 29 catastrophic multi-death fires resulting in 215 fatalities, including 38 children under age 6 in the United States. This includes those killed in the Nov. 8, 2018, Camp Fire in California.
