BREEZY POINT — More than 65 firefighters responded to a garage fire just before 7 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 12, on the 32000 block of Northwoods Lane in Breezy Point.

Pequot Lakes Fire Chief Tom Nelson said upon arrival the garage attached to the two-story home was fully engulfed. Firefighters from Ideal, Nisswa, Crosslake and Mission were called to assist Pequot Lakes firefighters as Nelson said they wanted to be prepared for the worst, as it is a larger walk-out home on the lake.

Nelson said the homeowners, James and Diane Williams, were at home when they smelled smoke. They went to check it out, saw the fire and got out of the home and called 911.

Firefighters extinguished the fire, but the garage was a total loss. The home was still standing, but sustained smoke and water damage, Nelson said. The insurance company will decide whether the home will be a total loss or not.

Nelson said the homeowners had a dog and a cat, and the cat didn’t make it out.

The cause of the fire is undetermined and the Minnesota State Fire Marshal’s office is investigating.

Nelson said the Williams had a place to stay for the night.

The Pequot Lakes Fire Department also responded to a carbon monoxide call Sunday morning on Winter Trail in Breezy Point. Firefighters investigated and it was unfounded. The alarm may have gone off due to a new furnace.
