The Brainerd Fire Department responded to a chimney fire 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, March 25, at a small building on a property on the 11000 block of Oro Way south of Merrifield.

Deputy Fire Chief Dave Cox said Thursday the owners used the building as a small office and workshop in the past and were in the process of cleaning it. The owner made a fire in the woodstove to warm it up and left for a couple hours. When he returned, he saw fire around the chimney on the roof. No one was inside at the time of the fire.

Cox said the building was not a total loss but there was damage to the roof and some of the walls inside.

Firefighters battled the blaze for about two hours.

North Memorial Health Ambulance and the Crow Wing County Sheriff’s Office assisted on scene.
