Forestview Middle School sixth grader Bridget Wells was recognized Thursday afternoon, May 9, as a winner of the nationwide Daughters of American Revolution National American History Essay contest.
Wells will be honored on June 20 in Washington, D.C., where she will read an excerpt from her essay on the women's suffrage campaign during a DAR national celebration.
The Daughters of the American Revolution sponsors the writing contest through the Brainerd Captain Robert Orr Chapter. Forestview Middle School teacher Amy Aus, whose students have been participating in the contest for the past five years, said Wells' win was a first for the school district.
"I've had some very talented writers over the years that have been very close to winning including-Peyton Freeman, Parker Freeman, Ericah Folden and many more-but Bridget Wells is the first national winner," Aus said in an emailed statement.
Carol Kirby, DAR Captain Robert Orr Chapter representative, recognized Wells' achievement Thursday at Forestview, when the final details of the trip and scholarship were revealed.
