Former Mrs. America accused of swindling Macy's

EDINA - Jennifer Susan Kline, a former Mrs. America and home shopping network host, appeared Tuesday in Hennepin County court on a charge that she swindled Macy’s in Edina of more than $5,000.

The charges surfaced after a store detective discovered that the clothes she returned weren’t the same ones she purchased, according to charges filed in Hennepin County District Court.

It appeared Kline had removed the labels and tags from the items she purchased and put them onto the items she returned. It wasn’t clear whether the items she returned really came from Macy’s, and some items couldn’t have returned to the racks even if they were from Macy’s.

“Several of the clothing items returned to Macy’s were dirty and showed signs of wear,” an investigator wrote in the criminal complaint.

After receiving the report from the Macy’s detective, Edina Police executed a search warrant at Kline’s home and found 24 clothing items she purchased Nov. 5 and 6 and supposedly returned, the charges say.

Kline, 50, was crowned Mrs. America for 1989 and has been a host on ShopNBC, according to the Hennepin County attorney’s office.
