A 57-year-old Fort Ripley man is serving 60 days in Crow WIng County Jail after pleading guilty to domestic assault from an incident on April 2.

Steven Thomas Stanek was sentenced April 7 in Crow Wing County District Court by Judge Richard Zimmerman to 60 days in county jail and two years probation. The judge allowed Stanek to partake in the sentence to serve program.

According to the court records, Stanek pleaded guilty and was convicted of gross misdemeanor domestic assault. A charge of gross misdemeanor charge of interfering with an emergency call was dismissed following a plea agreement.

The charges stem from an April 2 report of a physical domestic assault at a residence in St. Mathias Township

Crow Wing County Sheriff's deputies were called to the residence at 9:48 p.m. Upon arrival, deputies were informed by the victim that Stanek had assaulted her, taken her phone and left the residence on foot. The victim stated she and Stanek engaged in a heated argument and the woman went into the residence to get away from Stanek, court documents stated. Stanek followed her and, when the woman stated she did not want to discuss anything further, he grabbed her shoulders and neck with his arms and threw her to the ground, the court document stated.

Stanek then took the woman's phone and refused to return it. The woman was able to get away and drove to a nearby residence, where she called 911.

Law enforcement deputies were unable to locate Stanek that day. At 8:31 a.m., April 3, deputies were dispatched to the same residence after the woman reported Stanek had returned to the residence, but had again left on foot, before deputies arrived. Officers used cellphone location technology to track Stanek. Stanek was eventually located lying in a grassy field within a short distance from his residence.

Stanek has a previous conviction for misdemeanor fifth-degree assault on March 9.
