CROOKSTON - Two gas station managers were charged this week in state district court in Crookston with theft by swindling after allegedly embezzling nearly $200,000 from Northdale Oil in East Grand Forks over several years.

The charges against Craig and Tanya Scheer, 50 and 45 respectively, came after an oil delivery driver caught Craig stealing $700 in January, according to court records. The driver reportedly confronted Scheer, who allegedly admitted stealing about $7,000, records indicate. Scheer reportedly told the driver his wife knew about the thefts, according to the court documents.

An auditing report revealed multiple instances of improper and missing transactions and a large number of gift cards that were purchased and possibly used by the Scheers, according to a news release.

Northdale Oil sued the Scheers in civil court in May, and a settlement of $200,000 was reached in July. The Scheers are scheduled to appear in court on the theft charges Aug. 27.

The felony charge carries a maximum penalty of 20 years in prison and a $100,000 fine for each person.
