Governor-elect Tim Walz and Lieutenant Governor-elect Peggy Flanagan on Friday announced the start of a process to fill 27 upcoming scheduled vacancies on the Commission on Judicial Selection. Application materials will be accepted through close of business on Wednesday, Dec. 26, 2018.
"The Commission on Judicial Selection is critical to ensuring we have qualified judicial candidates for our courts," Walz said in a statement. "We are looking for leaders, attorneys and non-attorneys, who are ready to serve the people of Minnesota."
"We are encouraging Minnesotans, regardless of race, religion, gender, and party or political ideology, to apply," Flanagan said in the statement. "Our courts are the conduits of equal and fair justice and should reflect the diversity of Minnesota."
Seven at-large members, including the chair, will be appointed to the commission. Two district members will be appointed from each of the ten judicial districts. Appointments of the at-large members and judicial district members will include both attorneys and non-attorneys. Anyone interested in applying for membership should submit a letter of interest and resume to judicial.selection@state.mn.us .
The Commission on Judicial Selection solicits, considers and recommends candidates to the governor for vacancies in the district trial courts and the Workers' Compensation Court of Appeals. It is a joint commission, appointed by the governor and the Minnesota Supreme Court, and made up of nine at-large members, including the chair, and four district members from each of the ten judicial districts.
