A 36-year-old Deer River man charged with second-degree murder Tuesday in Itasca County is suspected of beheading a 20-year-old Hibbing man after first striking him with a baseball bat and stabbing him multiple times in the lungs with a machete, according to a criminal complaint.

Joseph Christen Thoresen, of Grand Rapids, was arrested Sunday in connection to the death of David Alexander Haiman, 20, of Hibbing, according to the complaint.

Haiman had been reported missing Saturday to the Hibbing Police Department.

During the course of the Itasca County Sheriff’s Office investigation, a female acquaintance of the two men told authorities she had been raped by Haiman, according to the criminal complaint.

Thoresen was scheduled to be arraigned at 11:30 a.m. Thursday in Grand Rapids.
