Great Decisions: The future of Kurdistan

Kurdistan, a mountainous area made up of parts of Turkey, Iraq, Iran, and Syria, is home to one of the largest ethnic groups in region: the Kurds. Most in the West know them for their small, oil-rich autonomous region in northern Iraq called Iraqi Kurdistan, one of the U.S.'s close allies in the Middle East and a bulwark against the expansion of the so-called Islamic State. What does the success of Iraqi Kurdistan mean for Kurds in the surrounding region?

The discussion will take place 11 a.m.-1:30 p.m. on April 18 at Heartwood Senior Living Community in Crosby. Great Decisions is eight stand-alone sessions Foreign Policy discussion based on readings and a DVD produced by the Foreign Policy Association in N.Y. How is U.S. foreign policy impacting the 2016 presidential election?

Tom Hanson returns to Lakes Area Unlimited Learning from a recent trip to Saudi Arabia to discuss U.S. foreign policy and its impact on the upcoming presidential race.

He currently serves as Diplomat in Residence at the University of Minnesota - Duluth and is also is a member of the Minnesota International Center's "Great Decisions" advisory committee and frequent Great Decisions speaker. He is a board member of the Oslo Center for Peace and Human Rights, U.S. Foundation and a former U.S. foreign service officer, participating in the opening of new U.S. Embassies in Mongolia and Estonia. His postings also included East Germany, France, Norway, the Soviet Union, Sweden and the former Soviet Republic of Georgia. He has worked with the Foreign Relations Committees of the U.S. Senate and House of Representatives and served as Director for NATO and European Affairs at the Atlantic Council of the United States in Washington, DC.

The general public and Great Decisions members are invited to the free event, which is scheduled for 1:30 to 3:30 p.m. on April 26 at Heartwood Senior Living Conference Center, 500 Heartwood Drive, Crosby.
