In recognition of World Habitat Day on Saturday, Lakes Area Habitat for Humanity will host open houses for people interested in learning more about volunteering.

The 30-minute open houses will be 10:30-11 a.m., 12:30-1 p.m., and 5:30-6 p.m. on Sept. 12 at 1110 Wright St., Brainerd.

Volunteer opportunities range from retail sales, cashiering, merchandising and customer service in the Habitat for Humanity ReStore to working on construction sites to helping with events. No experience is necessary and training is provided. Other opportunities requiring moderate to advanced skills include office/phone work, data entry, internet work, fundraising and marketing.

Volunteer time commitments start with four hours per month. Volunteers will meet friendly and caring people, learn new skills, use old ones, have fun and make a contribution to the community, a news release stated.

Lakes Area Habitat for Humanity is a locally run affiliate of Habitat for Humanity International, a nonprofit, ecumenical Christian housing organization with a mission to make affordable housing a matter of conscience. Volunteers provide most of the labor, and individual and corporate donors provide money and materials to build Habitat houses.

Partner families themselves invest hundreds of hours of labor-"sweat equity"-into building their homes and the homes of others. Families then make no-interest mortgage payments that go into a revolving Fund for Humanity used to build more houses. The organization serves Cass, Crow Wing and Hubbard counties.

The ReStore takes donated home improvement items and gives them new life by selling them to the public at discounted rates. Proceeds from the ReStore go to Lakes Area Habitat for Humanity to aid in the production of affordable housing in Cass, Crow Wing and Hubbard counties.
