Grab some sunscreen and prepare for a hot start to the weekend.

Even with the forecast mini-heat wave, the temperature today will have to reach a bit to set a new record. The current title holder is June 10, 1933, with a high of 95 degrees. Today's forecast calls for a high of 91 degrees. Saturday's high beneath anticipated sunny skies may reach 88 degrees. By Sunday, temperatures may be back below 80 degrees for the high, setting a trend extending well into the coming week.

With the heat, comes the chance for a thunderstorms today and everyday now through Wednesday with the sole exception of Saturday during the day. The southern wind today along with warm and humid air, higher temperatures today will give way to a north wind Saturday.

The National Weather Service in Duluth reports heat indices will climb into the 90s for many

locations. Those working outdoors today should wear light-colored clothing and drink plenty of fluids.

"There is a chance of thunderstorms for much of the day today," the weather service reported. "Some storms may be severe with large hail and damaging wind gusts possible, especially during the afternoon and early evening hours. There is also a small chance of a tornado with any storms, which develop near the warm front during the afternoon. Heavy rain will be likely with any storms which develop and may lead to localized flooding.

"Several rounds of thunderstorms are possible Saturday night through Wednesday."
