A house caught fire Wednesday, Dec. 12, on State Highway 87 in Backus, next to the Salty Dog Saloon.

The Backus Fire Department responded to the fire first and requested mutual aid from Hackensack. The Cass County Sheriff’s Department assisted as well.

According to Backus Fire Chief Jason Smith, the fire started in the kitchen and caused damage to the entire structure, deeming it a “complete loss.”

Smith said no people were hurt in the fire. He said his team pulled two cats out of the fire alive, out of five total cats owned by the homeowner. The homeowner said she was not sure if the other three cats were inside or outside at the time of the fire.
