Lutheran Social Service received an increase in federal funding to help struggling residents in Crow Wing, Morrison and Todd counties pay rent, mortgage and utility bills.
“We are trying to get the word out that financial housing assistance is available,” Arlene Selander, coordinator of Hope Housing for Lutheran Social Service of Minnesota, stated in a news release. “With the pandemic, word is not getting to people who need help.”
The state’s unemployment rate is decreasing but still high at 7.4%. While there is currently a temporary halt on residential evictions, renters are still on the hook to eventually pay their rent. Housing assistance is designed to help residents keep up on payments and remain in their homes.
Short-term rental assistance may be available for up to several months, giving residents time to build up their income to sustain their housing over the long-term. In addition, housing specialists can provide renter’s education and individualized support from six to 24 months to help people find employment and access other resources they need to get back on their feet.
