The Brainerd Area Environmental Learning Network will present John Mesko, executive director of the Sustainable Farming Association, to discuss ways to maximize food production while improving ecosystems.

Rural areas in central and northern Minnesota are becoming increasingly important as weather becomes more variable, a news release states. A local and regional food economy can benefit all businesses and residents, and Mesko's passion and drive for a revitalized "outstate" economy are at the core of this informative session.

The event will be 3-4:30 p.m. Thursday in Meeting Room 2 of the Crow Wing County Land Services building, 322 Laurel St., Brainerd. From 3-3:30 p.m., there is an opportunity to meet and network with others. The speaker will begin at 3:30 p.m. Parking is available in the visitor parking lot on Laurel and Fourth streets.

The Sustainable Farming Association is an organization focused on helping farmers meet the needs of the growing global population while supporting the environment. Mesko also teaches an environmental science course at the University of Northwestern - St. Paul.
