Heartland Animal Rescue Team is dealing with a substantial case of kennel cough in the dog population.

This is a very common occurrence in the shelter world, HART reported, due to the number of impounded and stray dogs that come in unvaccinated.

To be able to treat this outbreak and get the dogs back on the road to recovery, HART will be changing the protocol on how dogs are viewed for the next two weeks or so.

HART does encourage serious adopters to come out and meet the dogs and hopefully find it in their heart to adopt one of them. All the dogs on the adoption floor have been started on medication to help their symptoms and will have the meds sent home with them if adopted. Kennel cough is a virus that needs to run its course.

HART will be closed to visitors to prevent the spread of this virus. Check out HART's website at hartpets.org to view adoptable dogs prior to coming to the shelter. For those who are interested in a particular dog, call to see if the dog is up to being seen that day.

If people who visit HART have dogs at home, know this virus can be transferred to them.
