Satellite telemetry, deployment of geolocators on loons, blood and feather analysis and examination of unhatched loon eggs for petroleum contaminants has provided a comprehensive look at both the natural history and the impacts of the oil spill on Minnesota's loons. The next step in this process will be presenting a work plan to the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service for loon conservation work to be performed in Minnesota using restoration funds provided by BP for wildlife losses incurred during the oil spill.

The Lake and River Friendly Awards are sponsored by the Brainerd Lakes Area Audubon Society, Crow Wing County Lakes and Rivers Alliance, Crow Wing Soil and Water Conservation District, DNR Division of Ecological and Water Resources, DNR Section of Fisheries, Minnesota Chapter of the American Fisheries Society, The Nature Conservancy and the University of Minnesota Extension. Additional contributors include the Gull Chain of Lakes Association, Jerry Raedeke, Prairie Restorations Inc., Jaycees Run for the Lakes and the Whitefish Area Property Owners Association.
