BRAINERD — Business Highway 371 will reopen Saturday, Oct. 1.

The portion of the road between Greenwood Street and Buffalo Hills Lane/Industrial Park Road is set to open by 5 p.m. Saturday.

The intersection at Buffalo Hills Lane/Industrial Park Road will be an all-way stop until signal poles arrive in late November.

Motorists will continue to encounter periodic lane closures with flaggers between Barrows and Brainerd. Work will occur between sunrise and sunset on good weather weekdays through October.

Drivers should watch for workers and flashing equipment and expect to stop or slow down as crews remove traffic control devices, restore shoulders and establish turf, install permanent road markings, install rumble/mumble strips, and complete final punch list items.

Meeting called to discuss possible ways to temporarily open the road for the Labor Day holiday weekend

Begun in May, the $7.1 million project includes a smoother road surface, updated drainage and improved access and safety along the 4 miles of Business Highway 371 between Brainerd and Barrows.

Specific improvements include:

  • Center left-turn lanes at the intersections of 70th Avenue, St. Mathias Road/County Highway 21 and Greenwood Street.
  • Upgraded stoplight at Buffalo Hills Lane/Industrial Park Road.
  • Sidewalks on the east side of the road between Joseph Street and Industrial Park Road.

Also included in the project was the realignment of Greenwood Street to make it run perpendicular with South Sixth Street and allow for proper sight lines at the intersection. The Minnesota Department of Transportation performed the realignment up to 840 feet south of Woodland Hills Lane, and the city of Brainerd was responsible for the last portion.
Greenwood Street was also resurfaced, with aggregate shouldering added on the existing gravel road. Because it is a municipal state aid street, the city was able to use state aid funding for that portion of the project, which was estimated at just under $114,000.

Our newsroom occasionally reports stories under a byline of "staff." Often, the "staff" byline is used when rewriting basic news briefs that originate from official sources, such as a city press release about a road closure, and which require little or no reporting. At times, this byline is used when a news story includes numerous authors or when the story is formed by aggregating previously reported news from various sources. If outside sources are used, it is noted within the story.

Hi, I'm the Brainerd Dispatch. I started working a few days before Christmas in 1881 and became a daily paper two years later. I've gone through a lot of changes over the years, but what has never changed is my commitment to community and to local journalism. I've got an entire team of dedicated people who work night and day to make sure I go out every morning, whether in print, as an e-edition, via an app or with additional information at www.brainerddispatch.com. News, weather, sports — videos, photos, podcasts and social media — all covering stories from central Minnesota about your neighbors, your lakes, your communities, your challenges and your opportunities. It's all part of the effort to keep people connected and informed. And we couldn't do it without support.
