Goddard announces run for reelection

BRAINERD — Crow Wing County Sheriff Scott Goddard announced he will seek reelection.

“I am extremely proud of our office and the team of people that work to keep our residents and visitors safe,” Goddard stated in a news release Tuesday, May 17. “The last three and a half years have afforded me the opportunity to gain experience as your Sheriff and learn more of the needs, wants and future of Crow Wing County.”

Goddard stated during his time as sheriff, the office has had both accomplishments and challenges.

“We have faced the pandemic, while still providing professional response to the public, and implemented new programs for our community and our personnel. We are proud of the work we have done,” Goddard stated.

Goddard said some of the highlights include the Brainerd Lakes Area Drug Education program, the creation and implementation of an employee mental health wellness program, the return of the K-9 program, restructuring employee recruitment, retention and support programs, continued expansion of mental health services in the jail, more personnel on the Lakes Area Drug Investigative Division, and a remodel to the sheriff’s office that will include a training facility, bringing top training and trainers to the area.

Goddard said a great source of pride is his staff’s willingness to give back to the community.

“They continue to find new ways to help by donating their time and resources at local events, charities, cleaning ditches, making and serving meals, any and all ways to make Crow Wing County a better place,” the release stated.

Goddard said looking to the future, mental health concerns continue to be the office’s biggest challenge.

“This is evident in the calls we receive and respond to and those we house in our jail and serve in our court system. Our partnership with our local and state partners, volunteer organizations, courts and community services will continue to be a vital part of how we better serve this segment of our community,” Goddard stated.

Goddard said another focus must be who will be the next generation of law enforcement.

“It is challenging to find candidates for our deputies, correctional officers, dispatchers and support staff. I have lived here all my life and love what Crow Wing County offers. We need to ensure that we can find the personnel that can afford to find a house in our community and enjoy what many of us call home,” he stated.
