BRAINERD — The Brainerd Fire Department and Brainerd Ace Hardware are looking to spread awareness about fire safety during the month of October.

Four kids will receive bikes and helmets given away at the end of the month to the department's coloring contest winners.

Brainerd Fire Chief Tim Holmes said the department will partner with Ace to promote the fire safety message during Fire Prevention Week and all of October. National Fire Prevention Week is observed during the week of Oct. 9 in the United States. The first presidential proclamation of Fire Prevention Week was made in 1925 by President Calvin Coolidge.

“So this year's message is having a plan,” Holmes said. “We're really encouraging kids and families to have a plan for their house, in the event of a fire. Having a good escape plan, an area to meet up, and then just really talking with kids about what to do when they call 911.”

In addition to the contest, Holmes said the fire department will host its annual open house 5-7 p.m. Oct. 13 at the Brainerd Fire Hall on Laurel Street.

Also at the open house will be Brainerd and Baxter police, the Department of Natural Resources along with other area law enforcement and emergency services.

“Kids have an opportunity to look at our equipment and an area where the kids can spray our fire hoses and just see what that's like,'' Holmes said, adding fly-ins from North Memorial Health Air Care and Lifelink III air ambulances are also expected. Essentia Health will teach hands-only CPR for anyone who's interested.

There will be a bounce house for kids and hot dogs and popcorn being served to all guests.
