Pequot Lakes robbery sends man to hospital

The Cass County Sheriff’s Office responded to a call, reported at 2:54 p.m. Tuesday, March 29, of two individuals who had broken into a residence, west of Pequot Lakes. Deputies learned a 23-year-old man and a 21-year-old woman were both assaulted at the residence by two male intruders.

PEQUOT LAKES — A shooting in an early morning robbery Tuesday, March 29, put a 23-year-old Pequot Lakes man in the hospital.

The Cass County Sheriff’s Office responded to a call reported at 2:54 a.m. of an assault at a residence in Maple Township, in rural Pequot Lakes. According to the news release, deputies responded and learned the man and a 21-year-old woman were both assaulted at a residence by two male intruders.

The man was treated at the scene and was then flown to St. Cloud Hospital by North Memorial Health for injuries related to the assault, including a non-life-threatening gunshot wound.

According to the incident report, during the altercation the suspects hit the woman in the head with a pistol. She was treated on scene for injuries related to the assault.

Cass County Sheriff Tom Burch confirmed an incident took place but would not elaborate on details as the case is under investigation. Burch said they believe the act was not random and there was no danger to the public.

About 2 p.m Tuesday afternoon, the Cass County Sheriff’s Office carried out a search warrant in Jenkins.

“We have a good lead and suspects,” Burch said. “The investigation is continuing. There's just some more forensic evidence that needs to be gathered before we can move forward.”

The Cass County Sheriff’s Office was assisted in the search warrant by Pequot Lakes Police Department, Crow Wing County Sheriff’s Office and the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension.

Assisting at the scene and with the investigation were the Nisswa Police Department, Breezy Point Police Department, Crow Wing County Sheriff’s Office, BCA, North Memorial Ambulance and Air Care.
