Canoeists start their race up the Mississippi River on Saturday, July 30, 2022, going from Kiwanis Park to Evergreen Landing and back again in Brainerd. The race, which also included a wave of kayaks and a wave of paddleboarders, was part of the Smiles on the ‘Sippi event. The inaugural event, organized by suicide prevention nonprofit Smiles for Jake, was intended to provide an outdoor community venue to inspire positivity and normalize mental health discussions, organizers stated.
