MILACA - A 22-year-old Onamia man is accused of choking his girlfriend Saturday and now he is facing felony charges.

Skylor Phillip Weyaus was charged Monday in Mille Lacs County District Court for felony domestic assault by strangulation, felony of making terroristic threats with reckless disregard risk, two counts of misdemeanor domestic assault and two counts of fifth-degree assault attempt to cause bodily harm.

Weyaus had his first appearance in front of Judge Steven Anderson. The judge reviewed a criminal domestic abuse no contact order and set a Rule 8 hearing on Nov. 17.

• The Mille Lacs Tribal Police Friday were dispatched to a domestic assault in progress on the 17000 block of Aninaatig Loop in Onamia. Officers arrived and saw a 44-year-old woman walk into a residence. When the door opened, an officer observed a 20-year-old woman inside the residence and heard her say "he choked me." The officers followed the older woman inside and saw Weyaus and the victim standing in the living room. The older woman is the victim's mother.

• The officer spoke with the victim and her mother in a back bedroom. The victim told the officer, "he choked me, he choked me." She said she was sleeping and Weyaus yelled at her to count her money. Weyaus demanded to see her purse. She said Weyaus began to push her and grabbed her purse. He grabbed her by the arms and pushed her onto the bed, the court document said. The victim said she kept moving her purse away from Weyaus. When she attempted to get up from the bed, he began to choke her. Weyaus had one hand at the base of her throat and squeezed. The victim said she had a hard time breathing for three seconds. Then she pushed him off of her. The victim said Weyaus made threats while he was choking her about sending people over to her house and killing her. She said she feared for her life and did not feel safe being around Weyaus.

• The officer could see red marks on the base of her throat and in the middle of her neck, as well as red marks on her left bicep and forearm.

• Weyaus denied choking the victim, but admitted there was a dispute about money that was missing. The officer observed a scratch on top on his left hand and a small abrasion on his right index finger.

• The victim and the defendant are in a significant relationship off and on and have resided together at Weyaus' residence. The mother indicated that the victim should have never gone back to Weyaus because he physically abuses her. The victim said there have been prior assaults that she should have reported, but she didn't.

• Weyaus was arrested and transported to Mille Lacs County Jail. During that time, Weyaus repeatedly tapped the partition and kicked the door of the squad vehicle.
