An adult male was declared deceased at Bill's Gun Shop & Range at roughly 2 p.m. Wednesday, the victim of a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
Officers and first responders converged on the indoor shooting range, situated on Excelsior Road near the intersection of Highway 371, upon reports of a gunshot wound on the premises.
As of Wednesday afternoon it did not appear to be an accidental shooting, Baxter Police Department Chief Jim Exsted said. Officers were unable to reach family members to notify them of the death as of 5 p.m. Wednesday.
Exsted added the public is safe and declined to comment further, pending a forensic investigation. Wednesday afternoon, emergency responders exited the building with an empty gurney. Officers and investigators periodically filed into the building over the course of the afternoon-many carrying leather-bound brief cases and wearing street clothes. Mark Bjorlo, the Baxter Police Department chaplain, was also called to the scene.
Later, Baxter Police Department officers donned latex gloves and began searching the interior of an early-'90s silver Toyota Camry parked in the nearest parking spot adjacent to the entrance of the indoor shooting range.
Multiple squad cars were sidled up to the edge of the indoor shooting range, parked clustered near the entrance with their engines running, but it didn't deter a few customers from walking up to the door, reading the "Sorry, we're closed!" sign and returning to their vehicles.
More information about the shooting is expected Thursday.
