EVELETH - A 53-year-old man died after an all-terrain vehicle crash in central St. Louis County on Friday night.

The St. Louis County Sheriff's Office reported that Frank Kalata of Iron died from injuries suffered in the crash about 8 miles southwest of Eveleth.

According to the Sheriff's Office, emergency crews responded to the call just after 9 p.m. On arrival at the scene, authorities learned that Kalata had been operating a four-wheeled ATV south on Mobraten Drive when he lost control and rolled the machine.

Kalata, who was not wearing a helmet, was thrown from the ATV and suffered head injuries, authorities said. He was airlifted from the scene to Essentia Health-St. Mary's Medical Center in Duluth, where he was pronounced dead.

The cause of the crash remains under investigation. The Sheriff's Office reported Saturday that "it is believed that speed, alcohol and driver inexperience may have played a role in the crash."
