HUTCHINSON - A Hutchinson police officer was shot and injured and a 49-year-old man was killed in a scuffle that broke out Sunday afternoon.

According to Police Chief Dan Hatten, officers were called to a "verbal disturbance" at a residence in the 500 block of Harmony Lane about 4:14 p.m. Sunday.

While the officer was there, a scuffle broke out, shots were fired and Luverne Roy Christensen was pronounced dead at the scene.

The Hutchinson officer was flown to Hennepin County Medical Center with a gunshot wound to his leg that was not life-threatening.

State patrol officers and members of the McLeod County Sheriff's Department had also responded to the call. The Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension is investigating the shooting, which is standard procedure when an officer is involved in a shooting.

The Midwest Medical Examiner’s office identified Christensen on Monday afternoon.

"When I heard my officer was shot my first reaction was to pray he was going to be OK," Hatten said.
