Man with gun shot by Hibbing police officers

A man with a gun was shot and wounded by police officers in Hibbing, Minn., on Friday, Jan. 13, authorities said, and state officials are investigating the incident.

Another person was injured in an incident that led officers to be called to the 2900 block of Third Avenue East at about 12:45 p.m., the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension reported.

No officers were injured. The BCA is investigating the incident.

Two Hibbing police officers responded to a 911 call about a man with a gun and did encounter a man carrying a gun outside a residence, according to the BCA.

“At one point during the encounter, officers fired their weapons, striking the man,” the BCA said in a statement issued Friday night.

The man was transported to Fairview Range Medical Center in Hibbing and was later airlifted to Essentia Health-St. Mary’s Medical Center in Duluth, according to the BCA. His condition was not available Friday night.

A witness told WDIO-TV that he heard an argument and saw a man with a handgun before hearing multiple gunshots.

A person injured in the incident that prompted the 911 call was transported to Fairview Range Medical Center with non-life threatening injuries, the BCA reported.

The two people who were injured and the officers involved in the incident had not been identified as of Friday night.

Investigators don’t believe there is an ongoing threat to public safety, the BCA reported.
