FARGO – Barnesville native and current Mayville State (N.D.) University freshman tight end Matthew Holland died Saturday morning from seizures, according to Barnesville athletic director and football coach Bryan Strand.

Holland played baseball, basketball and football for Barnesville High School before following in the footsteps of his older brother James and signing a national letter of intent to play football for Mayville State in February.

Former classmates and friends took to social media Saturday to honor Holland.

Holland’s former Barnesville classmate and teammate and current Minnesota State Moorhead football player Michael Strand wrote on Instagram:

“RIP to the best TEAMMATE I ever had. This kid would have taken a bullet for anybody on his team and never backed down from anybody no matter how much bigger they were. We had our ups and downs but that’s what being in a brotherhood is all about.”

Former Barnesville teammate Isaac Goedtke wrote on Twitter:

“Prayers out to the holland [sic] family. A man that always had a smile on his face is now smiling above us all. Love you Matt, you will be missed.”
