A course hosted by Wellness in the Woods will focus on mental health first aid.

The eight-hour course on March 22 teaches participants how to help someone developing a mental health problem or experiencing a mental health crisis. The training helps with identifying, understanding and responding to signs of mental illnesses and substance use disorders. Studies show the program reduces the social distance created by negative attitudes and perceptions of people with mental illnesses.

The course will run 8 a.m.-4:30 p.m at Essentia Health-St. Joseph's Medical Center, 523 N. Third St., Brainerd. Lunch will be provided for all attendees free of charge.

The event is funded by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration and Crow Wing Energized. It includes certification for eight hours of education.
