Two U.S. Congressional candidates will participate in an October debate in the Brainerd lakes area.

Republican Pete Stauber and Democrat Joe Radinovich will discuss policy issues and make their case to Minnesota's 8th Congressional District voters at 6:30 p.m. Monday, Oct. 8, at Madden's Resort in Brainerd.

"Since the beginning of this campaign, I've heard from people across the district about the challenges they are facing in our changing economy," Radinovich said in a news release. "While this district is large and geographically diverse, working families deal with many of the same challenges-the rising cost of healthcare, anxiety about retirement security, and whether their children will have greater opportunity than their parents and grandparents. Our campaign is focused on solving these problems for the future, and we look forward to debating our opponent across the district so that voters can see the clear differences in our campaigns."

Caroline Tarwid, Stauber's press secretary, offered the following statement: "Pete looks forward to illustrating the fundamental differences between he and his opponent and is excited for more conversation and dialog with residents of Crow Wing County. After years of being stuck, Americans and Minnesotans are finally getting ahead in this reinvigorated economy and Pete wants to unleash the economic engine in the 8th district because he believes Minnesotans, not the federal government, make this region great."

Kevin Doran, KSTP 5 Eyewitness News anchor and Brainerd native, will moderate the debate. The event is presented by the Brainerd Lakes Chamber of Commerce, Brainerd Dispatch and League of Women Voters.

"I am honored to participate in the 8th District Congressional debate. We have strong candidates and there is a lot on the line. The outcome of this election will impact Minnesota and our entire country," Doran said. "5 Eyewitness News is thrilled to be part of the debate. As a Brainerd native I understand the issues that are important to people in the 8th District. I look forward to learning where the candidates stand."

Attendees will have an opportunity to submit written questions to the candidates. Attendance is open to everyone, but advance registrations are requested to ensure adequate seating.
