MOUNTAIN IRON - A 25-year-old woman died in an apartment building fire in Mountain Iron that displaced residents in 24 apartments Saturday morning.
The St. Louis County Sheriff’s Office reported that Shavondria Owens was pronounced dead at the scene at 8521 Raintree Drive in Mountain Iron.
Multiple fire departments responded at 6:21 a.m. Saturday to a report of smoke on the third floor from Owens’ apartment and her door felt hot, according to the Sheriff’s Office. Law enforcement evacuated the building, but were unable to get past the smoke and firefighters finished evacuating the two apartment buildings at 8521 and 8523 Raintree Drive.
The Sheriff’s Office and the State Fire Marshal’s Office are investigating the incident and haven’t found anything suspicious, the Sheriff’s Office said in a news release.
The American Red Cross is assisting the displaced residents.
