The homeless families nonprofit New Pathways is looking for Brainerd area community members to assist in reestablishing its program.
The nonprofit suspended its operations following a dispute with its previous landlord, Tim Taylor of Halverson-Taylor Funeral Home and Crematory.
“Our program is still on hold in the Brainerd lakes area,” stated Pamela Streed, executive director, in a news release. “While the need to move out of our last location was unfortunate, we believe it has given us the opportunity to re-evaluate the program and develop a more sustainable plan moving forward.”
One of the things the organization stated it needs is more leadership from Crow Wing County and surrounding areas. Streed said they are seeking a committee of people willing to act as an advisory group to the board of directors, as well as assist with local program development and fundraising.
“New Pathways believes this should be a locally driven program, as opposed to something developed and led by members outside the community,” Streed stated.

The organization seeks eight to 10 people in the Crow Wing County area. Ideal candidates would have the ability to make a two-year commitment, a strong desire to help families who are homeless, budget preparation experience, fundraising experience, knowledge of how many families in the area need shelter and the required capacity, the ability to meet at least monthly and invest additional time as required to make this successful and the ability to assist with a community assessment Sept. 9. New Pathways’ next step is to conduct an assessment. The objective is to evaluate what the community wants, needs and can support to help local families experiencing homelessness. Those with recommendations for organizations or individuals who should be a part of that event can email their contact information.
In addition to this assessment, the organization faces additional financial needs. To continue operating as it has been, New Pathways needs to raise approximately $180,000 annually for program expenses not covered by existing grants, the release stated. In addition, it needs funds to purchase or lease a new day center.
“Ideally, we would like to have commitments for at least one year of operating costs and the new facility before we restart the program,” Streed stated. “We are not asking for your contribution at this point, since we are still developing our plan, but just want you to be aware of the challenge we are facing.”
