The Northwoods Forestry Cooperative annual meeting is set for 8:30 a.m., April 9, at the Northland Arboretum visitor center in Brainerd. Proceedings begin with a hearty lumberjack breakfast followed by a very brief business meeting and election of officers.

Forrest Boe, director of forestry for the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources, is slated as the guest speaker. He will discuss a variety of topics related to private woodland owners, such as woodland stewardship plans, working with a consulting forester, harvesting timber and wood lot improvement. A question-and-answer session will follow, when individuals may ask specific questions relating to their own woodlot.

The public is invited. There is no charge other than a freewill offering, but an RSVP is requested. People are asked to let us know by April 6 if they will attend by calling 218-820-9479 or 218-764-3315 or emailing pelanin@brainerd.net .

The Northwoods Forestry Cooperative is 15 years old and has 36 members who control about 4,000 acres of forestland in central Minnesota. Members manage their small woodland properties for a variety of goals, such as planting trees, sustainable timber harvest, improvement of wildlife habitat and recreational use such as hunting, hiking or cross country skiing.

The cooperative publishes a quarterly newsletter, sponsors an annual educational field day and conducts activities at members' woodlots to assist the member owner in improving their woodlot. Members within the cooperative also own a portable sawmill. Co-op members may purchase a share in the sawmill partnership, so that they will be able to produce lumber from the trees on their own woodlots.
