Critical fire weather conditions will be possible Friday, June 4, in the afternoon across portions of northeast Minnesota.
The National Weather Service in Duluth reported abnormally warm temperatures are forecast with highs in the 90s. Winds may become gusty in the afternoon, with gusts likely to reach up to 25 mph or higher. Dry air in the low levels tomorrow is also likely to reduce minimum relative humidity below 30%.
A fire weather watch is in effect Friday afternoon through Friday night for temperatures, wind and low humidity for parts of northeast Minnesota, including Cass, Crow Wing, Morrison, Todd and Wadena counties.
Southwest winds of 5 to 15 mph may gusts up to 25 mph or higher. The relative humidity may be as low as 25% with temperatures in the 90s.
“These conditions are supportive of rapid fire growth,” the weather service reported. “A fire weather watch means that critical fire weather conditions are forecast to occur. Listen for later forecasts and possible Red Flag warnings.”

In addition, a hazardous weather outlook was issued for Cass, Crow Wing and Aitkin counties.
“A few thunderstorms will be possible today, mainly this afternoon into this evening,” the weather service reported Thursday. “Occasional cloud to ground lightning is the main threat. Severe storms are not expected. … There will be on and off chances for thunderstorms Friday night into next week. The chance for widespread severe storms is low at this time.
“Record high temperatures are possible Friday and Saturday with high temperatures reaching the 90s away from Lake Superior.”
